Eastern Mountain Sports in Peterborough, NH wanted to enhance the appearance of their monthly catalog mailer, and they chose us to help them. With our extensive background in apparel photography, the fit with Eastern Mountain was a good one, and started paying immediate dividends. The major challenge encountered along the way was capturing and maintaining correct clothing color, one of the most demanding areas in color separation. Whitepoint Imaging managed the color from initial capture through the proofing process on a fully calibrated system.
The equipment we used for this project was the state-of-the-art in digital capture systems: the Jenoptik MF Scan System.
The camera back can record images in 1 shot, 4 shot, or 16 shot modes (for ultra high resolution). The mode we used most was the 4 shot mode, which yields a 38 megabyte file, with no moire or resolution problems whatsoever. The raw color the Jenoptik System produces is some of the best color we've ever seen on any system. This colorfidelity makes our transition to color separations a very efficient one, with each process' capabilities being optimized to their fullest.The separation profiles we've established are tweaked for optimal performance and output, then we closely match our proofing system to a client's final output and usually a matchprint.
For EMS, our digital color files go to their separator, where images are assembled on film ready to burn to plates. After only a month into our relationship with EMS, their separator commented that our color was "some of the best they had seen from any digital studio", and that they had virtually no corrections to the files... quite a feat considering the challenges inherent with producing high quality clothing images. Another benefit to EMS was the fact that the clothing could ship directly to them after a shoot, with no need for it to travel to the separator and printer for color matching and quality control reasons.

Eastern Mountain Sports is in the process of upgrading their look to help establish themselves as a national brand. White Point, and its' team of stylists, have been creating a bold new look through the use of saturated color, dynamic lighting and action-evoking sets.
The result is clothing with a real "edge" and feel for the actual fabric. The products almost jump right out of the page! The bar has been raised and EMS now stands out from the pack of high adventure sports companies.
